Common questions

What must appear on an Australian tax invoice?

Every Australian tax invoice must include: the words 'Tax Invoice', your ABN, the date issued, a description of goods or services, the GST amount (or a statement that the total includes GST), and the total price. Invoices over $1,000 must also include the buyer's name and address and a unique invoice number.

Do I need a GST number on my invoice in Australia?

You need to quote your ABN (Australian Business Number) on all invoices. If you are GST-registered, also show the GST breakdown. You must register for GST once your annual turnover reaches $75,000. Below that threshold you still need an ABN, but you don't charge GST.

What is the difference between a tax invoice and a regular invoice in Australia?

A tax invoice is issued by a GST-registered business and includes the GST amount and your ABN. A regular invoice (recipient-created or non-GST) is issued by non-registered businesses. Your clients can only claim GST input tax credits if they hold a valid tax invoice from you.
