5 ways to get paid faster
Practical tactics that NZ freelancers use to reduce their average days-to-pay.
1. Invoice immediately โ don't batch
Invoice the moment work is delivered, not at the end of the month. Clients pay faster when the work is fresh in their mind. PayWren's โก Quick Invoice takes under 30 seconds.
2. Make payment effortless
PayWren puts your bank account number and a unique payment reference (the invoice number) front-and-centre on every invoice. Clients can copy-paste directly into internet banking โ no hunting for details, no emailing back to ask for your account number.
3. Use net-14 instead of net-30
30-day terms are standard but 14-day terms are equally common and acceptable for most NZ freelance work. Change the default due date when creating invoices, or update your standard payment terms in the invoice notes.
4. Chase promptly โ not aggressively
Send a friendly reminder on the due date if payment hasn't arrived. Use Chase โ Friendly in PayWren to generate a polished follow-up email instantly. Wait 5โ7 days, then escalate to Firm. A structured sequence gets results without damaging relationships.
5. Watch the Cashflow tab
Reports โ Cashflow shows predicted payment dates for all outstanding invoices, based on each client's historical payment behaviour. Clients who habitually pay late show up as red โ you can factor this in when quoting or taking on work.
