  • ·Editing, colour and sound
  • ·Equipment / kit hire

Tips for videographers

  • ·Editing usually dwarfs filming time. Show the hours so clients understand the post-production effort they're paying for.
  • ·Music and footage licensing you pass on should be itemised; it's a real cost and clients expect to see it.
  • ·Travel and accommodation for out-of-town shoots are billable. List them separately and keep the receipts for your expense claims.

Videographer invoicing, answered.

How do I invoice for a video project in NZ?
Separate filming, editing, equipment and licensing into their own lines, add travel if relevant, then GST at 15% if you're registered. Splitting the stages shows the value in the post-production, which is where most of the hours go.
Should licensing and music be on the invoice?
Yes. Usage licences (and any music you've licensed on the client's behalf) are real, billable items. List them separately with the scope and term so there's no ambiguity about where the footage can run.
Can I bill travel for an out-of-town shoot?
Yes. Mileage, flights and accommodation for a shoot are legitimate billable lines. Keep the receipts. They're also deductible business expenses for your own tax.
