Common line items

  • ·Callout / first-hour fee
  • ·Hourly labour rate
  • ·Materials and parts (with markup)
  • ·Certificate of Compliance (CoC) / ESC
  • ·After-hours or weekend surcharge
  • ·Travel or vehicle charge

Tips for electricians

  • ·List materials separately from labour. Clients (and their insurers) often need the breakdown, and it makes warranty claims cleaner.
  • ·If you issue a Certificate of Compliance, reference its number on the invoice so the job and the certification tie together.
  • ·Registered for GST? Show the 15% line. Most established electricians are, since the $60,000 turnover threshold is easy to cross on labour plus materials.

Electrician invoicing, answered.

What should an electrician's invoice include in NZ?
Your name or trading name and GST number (if registered), the client's details, an invoice number and date, a description of the electrical work, materials and labour shown separately, GST at 15% if you're registered, and your payment details. For jobs of $1,000 or more you also need the client's name and address.
Should I charge GST on a Certificate of Compliance?
If you're GST registered, GST applies to the whole taxable supply: labour, materials, and certification fees included. Show one GST line covering the full invoice rather than trying to exempt individual items.
Can I add a callout fee and an hourly rate?
Yes. Most NZ electricians bill a callout/first-hour fee plus an hourly rate after that. List them as separate lines so the client can see exactly what they're paying for.
