Common line items
- ·Surface preparation
- ·Labour (interior / exterior)
- ·Paint and materials
- ·Area-based pricing (per m² or per room)
- ·Scaffolding / access equipment
- ·Minor repairs (gib, filling)
Tips for painter & decorators
- ·If you quoted by area or per room, reference that in the description so the invoice matches the quote the client approved.
- ·Premium vs standard paint changes the price a lot. Naming the product on the materials line heads off 'why so much?' questions.
- ·Prep is where the labour goes. Showing it as its own line helps clients understand they're paying for durability, not just a coat of paint.
Painter & Decorator invoicing, answered.
Should I invoice painting by the hour or by the job?
Either works in NZ. Many painters quote a fixed price by room or m² and invoice that on completion, with materials itemised. If the scope changed mid-job, add variation lines so the final invoice still ties back to the quote.
Do I include paint in the invoice or charge it separately?
Most painters include paint and materials as a line on the same invoice. List it separately from labour so the client can see the split, and apply one 15% GST line over the total if you're registered.
What if the job scope changed from the quote?
Add clearly labelled variation lines (e.g. 'Variation: extra feature wall, agreed 14 May'). It keeps the invoice honest and makes the extra charge easy to defend.
